Scotland 2019

Background

This was Mark and Alexa's first overseas trip after both were retired. Although they had previously visited England, Wales and Ireland, they had not visited Scotland.

Alexa had relatives around Birmingham, where her father originally came from, so that was the first port of call. Then, because they have a houseboat of their own on the Murray River in Australia, they decided to spend a couple of weeks on a narrow boat on the Llangollen canal. It was cheaper to let the hire car sit unused for 2 weeks in the marina carpark than to return it to the renter for that period - always check your options when renting a car.

After that, it was North looking at Hadrian's Wall and Lindisfarne Castle, followed by an express trip up to the John O'Groats for a trip to the Orkney Islands. From there it was across to Cape Wrath via the Castle of Mey and Smoo Cave.
